Presented by: Paul Pantaleo and Breanne Glover, Literacy Specialists with the Greater Victoria School District

This research based on-line interactive in-service is designed for Reading Recovery, Elementary Learning Support and Classroom Teachers. The presentation is based on overwhelming evidence and findings from well-known literacy experts, such as Marie Clay, Richard Allington, Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell. The focus will be on strengthening the reading/writing connection for all students, especially our most at-risk learners. In an interactive manner, the presenters will demonstrate, describe and give examples of exemplary push-in or pull-out daily reading and writing (word work) interventions that dramatically accelerate the reading progress for all students. Participants will be given opportunities to practice and experience how to teach in a manner that facilitates powerful strategic activity. The question “What is possible for students experiencing difficulties in reading?” will be answered. Over the past nine years, hundreds of students supported by the presenters who were below grade level in reading, reached the average band of instruction. The presenters will also discuss how to use “Zoom” to support students not attending school in person during the pandemic.


Paul Pantaleo (BEd, MA and Post Masters Diploma) is currently a Learning Support Teacher and District Literacy Mentor in the Greater Victoria School District. Also, as a sessional on-line instructor at the University of Victoria he has taught numerous courses focusing on assisting students at the elementary level experiencing difficulties with reading and writing. He has also been an elementary vice-principal, Reading Recovery Trainer, Teacher Leader and Teacher.

Breanne Glover (BEd, Post Degree Diploma and MA) is currently an Inclusive Learning Support Teacher in the Greater Victoria School District. She has also worked as a middle and elementary school classroom teacher. She has experience as a Literacy Teacher Mentor at the district and school level.
